ANGELINA'S $26 RED CARPET GOWN
June 14, 2007
It's nice to know that despite a life filled with private planes and deluxe accommodations, Angelina Jolie is still willing to spend the same amount on her red-carpet attire as she does on her reading material.
On Wednesday afternoon in New York, the attenuated actress was snapped toting a copy of Dave Eggers' acclaimed new novel, "What Is the What," about Sudanese "Lost Boy" Valentino Achak Deng (Jolie is mentioned in the book).
The tome retails for $26, which just happens to be exactly what she paid for the vintage black dress she donned hours later for the New York premiere of "A Mighty Heart" (get the book for less here).
"Access Hollywood" says Jolie, who shills for the upscale St. John's clothing line, found the summer-unfriendly crushed velvet frock at the Los Angeles second-hand boutique Wasteland.
Still, her sartorial penny-pinching went only so far -- specifically, to her tootsies. The pillow-lipped star set off her thrifty ensemble with crystal-heeled, budget-busting Christian Louboutin peep-toe stilettos.
Angelina's other high-end red carpet accoutrement was Brad Pitt, who, when not trading adoring looks with the mother of his four ankle-biters, joined her in obligingly signing autograph after autograph for fans.
The premiere was not without a bit of controversy, however. FOX News has its fair-and-balanced panties in a bunch over the supposedly limited freedom of the press offered by Jolie.
FOX 411's Roger Friedman reports her legal pit bull asked journalists to sign an agreement stipulating they'd steer clear of questions about her private life, which she's recently discussed in detail with myriad media outlets.
The contract, which seems to be a carbon copy of the one her lawyer reportedly handed out to the press when the she was promoting the potential PR hot potato that was "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" in 2005, also specified that the interview "not be used in a manner that is disparaging, demeaning or derogatory to Ms. Jolie."
What's more, maintains Friedman, Angelina attempted to put the kibosh on FOX's coverage of the event, which, coincidentally, was a benefit for Reporters Without Borders (in the drama, Jolie plays journalist Mariane Pearl, widow of slain Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl).
The network was later given the green light to attend the premiere, although some outlets, unhappy with the restrictions, purportedly backed out of planned interviews (AP and USA Today were said to be among those who nixed the chats). Angelina later decided to ditch all her print sit-downs, according to FOX.
Despite the ostensible tête-à-tête restrictions, Brangelina breezily answered questions from "Extra" on how they plan to celebrate Father's Day this weekend.
"It's Father's Day?" asked Pitt, who was spotted Thursday carrying 3-year-old Pax to a doctor's appointment. "I didn't even know... I'll just get up with my kids. That's enough for me."
Teased Jolie, "Well if I tell you, then he'll know!" before revealing, "The kids are making things."
